Carla the Chinstrap – I’m sometimes called a stonecracker because of my loud call! I am one of the island’s most energetic residents. My name comes from the thin black line that wraps under my chin like a little helmet strap – a bit like the authority on the island, like my namesake Carl Anton Larsen. But I’m far cheekier than him!

Here on South Georgia, I thrive in a bustling colony. I’m a socialite – but I will argue with anyone who tries to steal my pebbles or territory! I’m very expressive with waving flippers and bowing to charging and staring if I’m unimpressed.

I’m a skilled swimmer, darting through the chilly Southern Ocean for krill and small fish – sometimes 50 miles from the shore. I can dive up to 70 metres (230ft) for 30 seconds at a time – I’m a talented penguin!

While the waters around South Georgia provide plenty to eat, I’ve noticed changes—warmer oceans and shifting krill populations. Still, we chinstraps are tough and spirited. No matter the odds, we will persist with your support.
