Georgia the Gentoo – Named after our iconic home, I’m Georgia! I am the very fetching gentoo penguin, one of the spirited residents of the South Georgia Islands. With my bright orange beak, white headband, and sleek black-and-white feathers, I cut a dashing figure among my fellow seabirds.

Life here on South Georgia is rugged but beautiful. We spend our year in colonies – even beyond mating season. I build my nest from stones and tussock grass, away from snow and ice. Stones are even a gift that male gentoo penguins sometimes give females when trying to woo them – obviously my mate gave me the best rock on the island!

We’re devoted and responsible parents, raising two chicks at a time. We even move our breeding grounds if we think last year’s is too messy! I excel in the water, where I reach speeds of up to 22mph (36 km) while chasing krill, fish, and squid. I can dive up to 450 times a day for my dinner!

Though our home is remote, changes in the climate and fishing practices remind me that even here, the world’s challenges find us. Still, we thrive in the cold, embodying resilience and the joy of life in one of Earth’s wildest places.
