Dr Jennifer Jackson of BAS is featured in this BBC article on the new study she has co-authored which suggests the humpbacks are back close to where they were. They now seem to be just short of 25,000 individuals in the southwest Atlantic – more than 90% of the pre-exploitation level.
The study “Assessing the recovery of an Antarctic predator from historical exploitation” is also discussed in this PEW article “Humpback Whales’ Recovery Underscores Need to Safeguard Feeding Grounds”
SGHT and FOSGI are helping to support the work of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), which is carrying out world-leading research into species that feed in South Georgia waters, such as the Southern Right Whale, Humpback Whale and Blue Whale.
