An artist, researcher, and Professor Emerita at the University of Dundee, where she established the Printmaking Department in 1988. Elaine’s career has spanned international exhibitions at venues including the Hayward Gallery and the Imperial War Museum, exploring themes of conflict and environmental impact. Her deep connection to the Southern Atlantic led her to co-found both the Centre for Remote Environments and the South Georgia Heritage Trust alongside Brigadier David Nichols. After 20 years of dedicated service as a founding trustee, she now serves as the Trust’s first Trustee Emeritus, a role that reflects her enduring commitment to the island’s future.
As a Shackleton Scholar and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Elaine views the island as a unique canvas for habitat restoration and environmental advocacy and she believes that by bridging the arts and sciences, we can foster a deeper international understanding of South Georgia’s significance. Her commitment remains steadfast: to protect this pristine environment and to ensure the Trust continues its extraordinary work in restoring and safeguarding one of the world’s most significant natural habitats.
