At Stromness Whaling Station work is ongoing on to save globally important Shackleton heritage. The Stromness Manager’s Villa was in a severe state of disrepair, so SGHT and FOSGI have acted to save this iconic building from imminent collpase.

As one of the most important pieces of Shackleton heritage in the world because of its role in the Endurance story, the Villa was the place Shackleton, Worsley & Crean reached on 20th May 1916 after the most epic of adventures to raise the alarm for rescue of the expedition party marooned over 800 miles away. Saving Shackleton heritage Support Now > Master heritage carpenters from Norway who have previously restored buildings elsewhere on South Georgia were part of a survey of the villa in 2022. They reported exactly what had to be done to save the building.

We’ve raised over £3million to preserve the iconic Stromness Manager’s Villa and with our expert team from Norway, the UK and the Falkland Islands, the Villa is no longer in imminent danger. But South Georgia’s savage weather means that the Villa will need yearly maintenance to protect it.
