• The Island Invasives 2017 conference takes place from the 10ᵗʰ to the 14ᵗʰ of July, 2017, opened by SGHT’s Patron HRH The Princess Royal. The conference is organised by SGHT in partnership with the host venue, the University of Dundee. The conference is attended by 275 delegates from 44 different countries. It includes 19 different sessions, 96 talks and several workshops.
• In October, November and December 2017, the next generation of Team Rat assisted by GSGSSI staff and Fisheries Patrol Vesel, and Thies Matzen and Kicki Ericson on their yacht Wanderer III, deploy a variety of rodent detection devices around South Georgia’s 1000 km coastline.
• In late December, New Zealand dogs Will, Ahu and Wai and their handlers Miriam and Jane join Team Rat. The dogs and handlers survey large swathes of land on foot, before joining the rest of Team Rat on the vessel Hans Hansson in March/April 2018. While devices are collected and checked for rodent sign, the dogs survey the areas to give an extra degree of confidence in the accuracy of any findings. No surviving rodents are found.
• In February 2017 SGHT submits an outline plan to GSGSSI for the opening of the Main Store to visitors.
