The Trust receives funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Dynamic Collections Campaign for a “Whalers’ Memory Bank” project developed by Curator Jayne Pierce in partnership with several Scottish museums. By using archives and collections from several museum partners and with the involvement of ex-whaling communities in Scotland, a digital “shop window” will allow audiences off-island to access historical images, oral histories, recollections, stories, sounds and video that relate to the whaling industry on South Georgia – an important and often overlooked aspect of Scottish social history

SGHT and FOSGI support RSPB and Birdlife in their efforts to reduce albatross deaths by working with the fishing fleets in South Africa, whose areas of operation are known to overlap with the feeding grounds of South Georgia’s albatrosses.
Winning entries from competitions for junior school children to draw and write about South Georgia are display at the South Georgia Museum, following a schools’ package being sent out to 8,000 schools in the UK and UKOTs through the Hanson Box programme
SGHT and FOSGI support GSGSSI’s work to survey populations of black-browed and grey-headed albatross. The outputs of these surveys will provide a basis for ongoing monitoring and conservation management as part of the new South Georgia Terrestrial Protected Area.
